I don’t know about you, but I find America’s love affair with guns frightening. Apparently, so do many other people because that’s the reason gun sales continue to soar. The more people who buy guns, the more other people want to buy them. It’s literally an out-of- control arms’ race.
A welcome fresh approach to a tragic problem. But the view from Chicago, which has both some of the strictest gun laws and highest gun-related crime rates in the country, is that the root cause is drugs. The illegal drug trade is creating the conditions for violence. A technological, medical breakthrough for drug addiction as well as effective treatment of mental illness would transform the social environment and make not just Chicago, but the entire US a better place to live.
